27/11/08 - Brief solution-focused practice for people working with Young People
27-28 January 2009 & 4-5 March 2009 (four day course)
Stratford – E15

Brief Solution-Focused Practice is a practical tool which can be used in a wide range of setting. and assumes that change and development is always achieved by people drawing on their resources. The approach is therefore radically competency-based, talking and thinking in a way that invites people to be noticing of and naming of their resources and strengths. Solution Focused Practice concentrates on everything that is already being done that is moving, or has the potential, to move in the direction of the preferred future. The focus is on doing what works, which motivates more than dwelling on what does not. Solution Focused Practice is progress sensitive and develops constructs which allow progress to be highlighted and the lessons of progress to be learnt.

This course is suitable for practitioners, and their managers, who work with young people in a one to one situation in a wide range of agencies and contexts.
The four day courses cover all the main elements of solution focused brief therapy including:
• Meeting the person
• Identifying resources
• Defining a preferred future
• Eliciting what is already working
• Evaluating progress with scales
• Giving constructive feedback
• Offering suggestions
• Highlighting change

These will normally have been covered in lectures, discussions, videotapes and exercises by the second day. The second two days will allow participants to practice these skills in relation to their own clients through well-structured exercises. By the end of the course each member should have a sufficient grounding to try out any of the techniques in their everyday work and with further reading and support to become, should they wish, a reasonably competent solution focused brief therapist. There will be a complete set of course notes provided for each participant.

£360 per delegate (book the course before the 2.12.08 and get an early bird discount of 10%– i.e. pay only £324) Payment is required in full at least 14 days prior to course commencement.

Please contact us (training@londoneastconnexions.co.uk): for an application form (our website is currently being updated) and return it to: Training & Development, London East Connexions Partnership, 4th Floor Solar House, 1-9 Romford Road., Stratford, London E15 4LJ training@londoneastconnexions.co.uk Tel: 020-8536-3630, Fax: 020-8534-2830

11/09/08 - Professional boundaries for practitioners working with young people
9.30 – 5, 6 November 2008
Stratford, London E15

Practitioners working with young people can often face a lot of personal pressures in their work. This can cause conflict and stress if they find that their professional boundaries are being ‘pushed’. This training is designed to help practitioners identify, and apply practical solutions to these issues.

• Why are they important/advantages of boundary setting?
• Who sets the boundaries?
• What are the consequences of boundary violation?

Addressed using workshops and discussions using professional experience, case studies, to provide participants with an understanding of what professional boundaries are and why they are needed. Explore power balance/imbalance, who negotiates the boundaries and who is accountable should a violation occur. Smart Boundaries, workshops begin with a self-evaluation and assessment of practice styles and behaviours which may indicate potential liability risks. Awareness of susceptibility by assessing personal and professional vulnerabilities, general to the professional and specific to the individual, which place him or her at risk for boundary violation

12/08/08 - CAF Cards for Practitioners
30 September 2008, 9.30–5
Stratford, E15

CAF Cards have been specifically developed to fully engage and empower young people in the Common Assessment process. The cards focus is on the individual and they act like doors to a room that a young person may enter and explore. The CAF Cards can enable them to learn to shape and design a more rewarding future and start to enjoy the freedom that brings.
• They invite young people to engage in the process
• They create motivation to explore and create new meanings
• They allow young people to see graphically where they are at the moment
• They reveal the options that were already there and leave the young person with new choices.
• They provide a tool for practitioners who will be using the CAF to work in a young person centred way
• They support staff in undertaking assessments with young people that gather the information we need

The Road Sign Cards offer a metaphor to guide the young person through a process of goal setting, planning and creative thinking. Life is a journey and the cards create a route. Goals are destinations and a means to an end and routes to destinations. It doesn’t matter where they start from because the cards will help them overcome any problems.

London East Connexions is rolling out CAF Card training across London and the South East; we invite you to add this exciting new tool to your range.
Please note that this training day is NOT about how the Common Assessment Framework will work generally, but is about providing practitioners with a tool which will enhance their young person centred work.

To complement the training, all delegates will receive a presentation box containing:
• a set of CAF Cards
• a set of Road Sign Cards
• a Training Manual with details of additional ways of using the Cards plus other useful reference materials

Further details of CAF Cards can be obtained from: http://www.cafcards.co.uk

01/08/08 - Professional Boundaries for Practitioners Working with Young People
24 June & 16 September 2008
9.30–5, Stratford, E15

Practitioners working with young people can often face a lot of personal pressures in their work. This can cause conflict and stress if they find that their professional boundaries are being ‘pushed’. This training is designed to help practitioners identify, and apply practical solutions to these issues.
• What are professional boundaries?
• Why are they important/advantages of boundary setting?
• Who sets the boundaries?
• What are the consequences of boundary violation?

Workshops and discussions using professional experience, case studies provide participants with an understanding of what professional boundaries are and why they are needed. We explore power balance/imbalance, who negotiates the boundaries and who is accountable should a violation occur. Workshops on Smart Boundaries begin with a self-evaluation and assessment of practice styles and behaviours which may indicate potential liability risks. We focus on awareness of susceptibility by assessing personal and professional vulnerabilities, general to the professional and specific to the individual, which place him or her at risk for boundary violation

Suitable for: Personal Advisers, Youth Workers, Learning Mentors and other practitioners working in any capacity with young people in the voluntary or statutory sectors.

This course is aimed at a wide range of practitioners (including Connexions, YOT, youth workers, learning mentors etc) working with young people with who may be displaying signs of having mental health issues. Our course has a unique approach of getting practitioners to focus on identifying the symptoms of poor mental health when making a referral. The course does not cover different diagnostic labels. 02/07/08 - Dangerous Cocktails - A Conference on Alcohol, Drugs and Families
26 September 2008, Tavistock Centre, London

Statistics show that drink addiction is on the increase, particularly among women and young people. In 2005/6 there were over 180,000 NHS hospital admissions among adults aged 16 and over with either a primary or secondary diagnosis specifically related to alcohol. This has more than doubled in the last decade. In the same period over 5000 children under the age of 16 were admitted to hospital with drink-related problems.

This conference not only looks at work with adults and young people, but also with families. The day will include themed workshops and small group discussions, which will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their own work and gain new perspectives and support in thinking about very difficult problems, as well as sharing their own experiences with others working in the same field. The conference will be of interest to professionals working in drug and alcohol services, social workers in child and adult services, nurses, occupational therapists and any other professionals working in this field.

• Growing Up With Addiction in the Family - Martin Weegman, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Group Analyst, Henderson Hospital
