General welfare advice and information; opportunities through access; enabling local people to become actively involved in and comment on access issues; 1-2-1 advocacy, support and training for volunteer advocates; regular consultation meetings on a range of topics. Benefits service; supporting disabled people by ensuring maximisation of benefit entitlement. This includes appeals and tribunals where necessary. Free service.

Alternatives Crisis Pregnancy Centre
Schools and educational work, out-reach worker, home visits. The 'We Are Family Group' for young and vulnerable parents includes outings, parenting classes and life skills teaching, e.g. handling conflict, self-esteem, therapy around unplanned pregnancy and post abortion. Free service with clients being seen within 1-2 days. No childcare facilities at counselling centre but crèche provided at the 'We Are Family Group'.

Arc in the Park
Offers the opportunity for local people and children to come together, provides a safe environment for children to play while parents receive support. Play work is free, there is a £1 entry charge for youth club. Workers have NVQs or diplomas, a BA in art, management qualifications, food and hygiene and advanced child protection.

DASL (Drug and Alcohol Service for London)
Young persons' counselling aims to work with young people in an age-appropriate way, on the impact of living in a family where there is parental substance misuse and domestic violence. This will include providing young people with alternative strategies to managing personal or relationship difficulties rather than misusing substances and using violence. Service is free to residents of Newham or attending school in Newham. Waiting list usually 3-4 weeks. Counsellors have a minimum counselling diploma and there is a specialist young persons' counsellor. Clinical specialisms in substance misuse and domestic violence.

Youth Club for young people aged 10 to 20 years with activities including football, dance, table tennis and educational sessions; after school club for children 5 to 11 years, with sessions for special needs children and a homework club; Junior Hammers Football Club, who provide weekly coached sessions, competitive league play, and a schools holiday programme; Adult Education Courses in partnership with Newceys; Age Concern offering advice for the over 50s; Job Centre Plus, this service seeks to encourage adults back into employment, by offering help with job search, compiling CV’s and job applications as well as interview techniques; Community Groups, over 40 organisations use the centre offering a range of services from Pensioner Clubs, Martial Arts, Music, Dance and lots more.

We recruit and train volunteers who usually have parenting experience, offer emotional and practical support in families homes for between 2 to 3 hours a week. We also have a weekly Family Group.

Language, communication and interaction team
The language, communication and interaction team is part of the learning support service and works in partnership with parents and carers as well as schools and early years settings to support parents or carers of children aged 0-4 with severe communication difficulties. Develop parents or carer skills to communicate confidently with their children; liaise with schools to ensure that young children with severe communication difficulties make a successful transfer into school or nursery; support children aged 5-16 who have severe and specific speech, language and communication difficulties so that they have positive experiences in school; liaise with schools to ensure that children and young people aged 5-16 on the autistic continuum have positive experiences in schools.

Newmartin Community Youth (NCY) Trust
Three full-time youth workers are supported by a team of volunteers to provide a range of lunch-time and after-school workshops to address incidences of school based anti-social behaviour. The project has also developed peer mentors, supporting the PSHE and citizenship agendas. The project links with Newham’s after-school partnership and will be active in six secondary and three primary schools clustered around the Green Street, Plaistow areas. Free service, with waiting list. Practitioners have training in psychology (BSc), Adavanced Diploma in Counselling - accredited centre, NNEB nursery nurse (distinction), bereavement training, child protection training.
